Did you know that Jeff Bezos wanted to name Amazon Cadabra as in abracadabra? What if I told you that Wikipedia has employed thousands of bots? Or, the Firefox logo isn’t a fox but a red panda?
I know these bits of information might be a bit difficult to digest, but they’re facts. And just like them, there are so other facts about technology that we’re clueless about. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that even after being surrounded by tech, there’s still a lot we don’t know.
And, here, I’ll be sharing a few surprising facts about the tech that most people don’t know about.
So, let’s begin!
NASA Has the Fastest Internet
The National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) is one of the pioneers in exploring space. To date, they’ve sent hundreds of missions into space to study the ever-increasing universe.
And for this purpose, it’s totally understandable that NASA needs a very fast, almost 13,000 times faster internet than traditional broadband connections.
That said, I don’t believe any household would require such a fast connection. For instance, I’m currently subscribed to one of the AT&T WiFi plans, and it’s a perfect connection for my household’s needs. I can transfer large files, join online meetings, and a lot more, on its symmetrical-speed internet.
No One is Safe from Cybercriminals
If you think that you have nothing to hide and hackers would never target you, think again. Cybercriminals have become smarter and can target our personal devices, such as smartphones, laptops, and other gadgets, in unimaginable ways.
For instance, online ads that we see on websites, apps, and games can also be used to steal our data. Seemingly, such ads are harmless, but hackers can infect them with a virus, which activates when we click on them.
Plus, large corporations can be the priority target of bad actors. However, it still doesn’t ensure that hackers will never target your device and data. So, don’t think that you’re out of danger. Other than this, always take extensive security measures, such as using a VPN, a secure connection, anti-virus tools, and firewalls to safeguard your data.
Artificial Intelligence Is Not Always Right
The boom of AI might be the greatest tech advancement in the 21st century. Today, AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and several others can generate results the way we want. However, what most people don’t consider is that AI is not always right, and it can make silly mistakes like humans.
Let me explain why.
AI tools are trained on large datasets. These datasets are processed and fed into AI models, which then produce results relevant to our queries. Now, if there are discrepancies, inaccuracies, or biases in the data set, the AI model might not produce the correct results.
So, never trust AI blindly and always double-check its results from verified sources.
EVs Can Harm Our Environment
Electric Vehicles (EVs) have taken over the automobile market by storm in recent times. EVs are smarter, and considering how little maintenance they require, they’re becoming increasingly popular among people.
Another major unique selling point of EVs is that they’re pollution-free, or green vehicles. However, it’s not true because EVs can also pollute our environment. It’s a fact that EVs have zero tailpipe emissions.
However, they still require electricity to charge the lithium-ion batteries, which leaves a carbon footprint on the environment. Plus, EV batteries are not fully recyclable, as only important elements, such as lithium and lead can be retrieved by cycling them.
So, in short, EVs are not as polluting as traditional vehicles, but to say that they don’t harm our environment at all is wrong.
Google is the Most Popular Search Engine
There are different search engines available today, such as Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, and Baidu. However, even collectively, they don’t have more audience than Google.
You’d be shocked to hear Google has captured over 91% share of the search engine market. Not just this, Google registers over 3 billion search queries every day. Also, such a massive audience is the key reason why Google is the number one choice of most businesses when it comes to search engine marketing.
So, for a company that started from a rented garage in 1998, Google has come a long way in the world of search engines.
To conclude, these are some of the most amazing facts that I’ve found about the technology. Some of these are mind-boggling, such as NASA’s internet speed, while some are frightening to the core, like the looming threat of cybercriminals.
