Are you guilty of neglecting your garden? Is your garden an area of your home that you don’t tend to spend much time updating, even though it’s due for one and could benefit hugely? You are not alone if you are. Many people tend to prioritise the interiors of their home, then move on to their garden, even though their garden could be the area that has the most potential.
When the weather’s nice and most of the summer, your garden is an area where you probably spend most of your time. It’s a space where you can host guests, relax and read a book, as well as cook dinner (if you have a BBQ), and it’s because of these reasons (and others) that you should think about making some upgrades.
There are so many changes that you can make to your garden – too many to list in fact. You could redecorate your fencing, install decking, add lighting, purchase new furniture, invest in some feature pieces – the list goes on.
To help inspire you, we have put together a brief guide on six ways to take your garden to the next level. Hopefully, there are a few suggestions which can help you transform your garden into a space which you are proud of and want to enjoy spending your time in.
Install decking
Installing decking is a great place to start. Decking is ideal as it gives you a place to relax in your garden as well as host guests. A lot of people will install their BBQ on their decking as well as keep all their furniture on it when leaving it out. Decking adds a nice design to your garden, and it requires less upkeep than looking after the lawn – with that being said, a battery lawn mower can keep your lawn under control.
Play around with lighting
Lighting can be a great addition to your garden. A lot of people underestimate how important lighting is and how it can really affect the way your garden looks, especially when it gets dark. You can use lighting to highlight a pathway, you can use lighting to light up key areas of your garden, as well as over your decking, to make your decking a more relaxing space. If you enjoy your technology, there are plenty of smart lighting options which you can install which you can control via your voice or through an app on your phone.
Consider feature pieces
Depending on the size of your garden and your budget, adding some feature pieces is a nice way to change the dynamic of the space, very quickly. Feature pieces are easy to install (in most cases, you just buy them), and you can use them to express your personality. A feature piece can be anything from a water fountain to a statue of your favourite football player. Some people like to get bird baths as feature pieces or ornaments. What’s best is to visit your local garden centre and see what they have to offer; this way, you can get some inspiration.
Redecorate your garden
Over the colder months, a lot of your garden can receive a battering. The wind and rain can cause paintwork to chip and tire, making your garden look old when it comes to the summer months. You’ll be amazed and what a little bit of redecorating can do. A good place to start is to repaint your fences as well as your shed. You can touch them up in the same colour if you are pushed for time, or you can go for a completely new colour to give them a new lease of life. If you have any wooden chairs or benches, a repaint may be needed for these. As well as painting, pressure washing any flooring that isn’t lawn can also help. A good place to look for inspiration is Pinterest.
Purchase new furniture
A simple route to go down is buying new furniture to replace what you already have. If you haven’t updated your furniture in a long time, then it could be due for a replacement. Why not do some research and see what new pieces of furniture are out there which can replace what you currently have? Whilst doing your research, you could also look into new pieces of furniture that you can buy as an addition to what you currently have. For example, do you have a fire pit? Do you have a garden footstool or reclining chairs? There is plenty that you may not have, which will benefit you.
Create zones
Have you ever thought about creating zones in your garden? Zones can be very useful as they make the most out of the spaces you currently have – especially if you have a big garden. Depending on your interests, you can create many different types of zones. You could create a zone for your children to play in, a zone where you host guests and a zone where you grow your own fruit and vegetables. Alternatively, you could create a zone for growing plants, a zone for working out and a zone for your pets to play in. What it comes down to is your lifestyle and how the different zones will benefit you.
As you can see, we have only touched the surface of all the changes you can make to take your garden to the next level. There are so many things you can do which haven’t been included, which could make a big difference – what it often comes down to is your budget and your timeframe for making changes.
What changes are you planning on making to your garden and why? Which of the changes above do you think will make the biggest difference to your garden? Is there something you think can make a big difference which we haven’t included in our guide on taking your garden to the next level? Let us know in the comment box below. We look forward to hearing from you.
